Life

Vinzenz Hilber was born in Graz in 1853. He studied at the Universities of Graz and Strasbourg . In Graz he became Dr. phil. PhD and habilitation in geology in 1898 . Hilber had been a volunteer at the Geological Reichsanstalt in Vienna since 1878 . From 1879 to 1884 he carried out geological surveys in Galicia as an employee of the Geological Reich Institute .

On September 1, 1891, he was appointed curator at the Landesmuseum Joanneum and titular associate professor for geology and paleontology at the University of Graz. From 1893 to 1895 he carried out geological field surveys in numerous Balkan countries and in 1896 was commissioned by the editorial staff of the "Carte géologique de l'Europe" to correct the geological maps of the Balkan countries . In the period that followed, he traveled through northern, eastern and south-eastern Europe and the Orient. Among other things, he researched the geology of Thermopylae , important fossil sites such as the Pikermi mammal site in Attica .

In 1898 he became an associate professor at the University of Graz, in 1912 a full professor, and in 1924 he retired from the university. At the Joanneum he was a co-founder of the geological department in 1891 and headed it - from 1915 onwards - until his death. In 1904 he was appointed to a commission for the definition and protection of natural monuments . In 1930 Hilber was appointed Hofrat .

Hilber employed u. a. deal with stratigraphic questions of the Young Tertiary in Galicia and Styria , the principles of valley formation and mollusks and gastropods of the Tertiary. He also worked in the field of prehistory . For example, he succeeded in discovering a Neolithic man in a cave near Peggau .
