Friedrich Martin Berwerth

Friedrich Martin Berwerth (born November 16, 1850 in Schäßburg , Transylvania , † September 22, 1918 in Vienna ) was an Austrian mineralogist and petrographer.

Berwerth, the son of a pharmacist, studied chemistry in Vienna and Graz and received his doctorate from Heidelberg University in 1873 . During his studies he became a member of the Allemannia Heidelberg fraternity . Afterwards he was assistant at the mineralogical-petrographic institute of the University of Vienna with Gustav Tschermak , who also brought him to the kk Hof-Mineralienkabinett, which later became the natural history court museum. In 1897 he became head of the petrographic and mineralogical department and in 1905 director of the Imperial and Royal Natural History Court Museum. In 1918 he retired. At the same time, after his habilitation in petrography (1888), he became associate professor in 1894 and full professor at the University of Vienna in 1907.

He had the title of councilor.

In later years he dealt mainly with meteorites .

In 1901 he founded the Vienna Mineralogical Society with Friedrich Becke . The German Mineralogical Society was founded on his initiative in 1908 .
