André Freiwald

André Freiwald (* 1961 ) is a German geologist and paleontologist .

André Freiwald studied geology and zoology at the University of Kiel (1983–1988) and received his doctorate in 1993 at the Geomar research center . After a time as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Bremen , he was initially a Heisenberg fellow. He then became Professor of Invertebrate Paleontology at the University of Tübingen (2000–2002), but then switched to the Chair of Paleontology in Erlangen. Since 2010 he has been head of the marine research department at the Senckenberg Institute Wilhelmshaven and at the same time professor at the University of Bremen.

Freiwald's research area is the formation, development and endangerment of reefs . He has v. a. busy with cold water corals and their reef formation. Together with other geologists, he is also interested in the formation of carbonates in regions outside the tropics. He undertook numerous expeditions on research ships.

For 2016 he was awarded the Gustav Steinmann Medal .
