Adolph Knop

Adolph Knop , also Adolf Knop, (born January 12, 1828 in Altenau (Harz), † December 27, 1893 in Karlsruhe ) was a German geologist and mineralogist .

Life

Knop's father was a lieutenant in the Hanover Army and a warehouse manager in Osterode . After completing his schooling at the grammar school in Clausthal, Knop worked for two years as a practical geometer before studying mathematics and natural sciences (chemistry, geology and mineralogy) at the University of Göttingen . His teachers included the chemist Friedrich Wöhler and the mineralogist Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann .

In 1849, Knop became a teacher of natural sciences and mathematics at the higher vocational school in Chemnitz. In 1852 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. He published geological works and was therefore appointed as an associate professor for geology and mineralogy at the Giessen in 1856 and began teaching there in 1857. He was made a full professor in 1863.

In 1866, Knop moved to the Polytechnic University in Karlsruhe as a full professor of geology and mineralogy . In 1878 he also took over the management of the Grand Ducal Natural History Cabinet as successor to Moritz August Seubert . In 1877 he received the title of Hofrat and in 1884 he became a Privy Councilor . In 1874/75 he was director of the TH Karlsruhe. Knop mainly dealt with mineralogy with chemical and crystallographic approaches. On behalf of the Grand Duke of Baden, he examined the mineral springs in Baden-Baden . On October 9, 1877, he was the first to prove that there was a connection between the sinking of the Danube and the Aachtopf , the karst spring with the most water in Germany.

He gave the initiative to found the Upper Rhine Geological Association in 1871. He was a member of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors . He was also active in the Natural Science Association in Karlsruhe.

Adolph Knop had been married since 1856 and had two daughters and a son.
