The Cerberus Fossae (Trenches of Kerberos ) are two almost thousand kilometers parallel trenches ( Fossa ) on Mars at 11.28 ° north latitude and 166.37 ° east longitude. The two trenches extend from the northwest to the southeast and actually consist of many shorter, mutually merging and parallel expansion fractures. The trenches are very steep-walled everywhere, in some places even almost vertical, which indicates their young age. This was confirmed in 2019 when the Mars InSight mission recorded Mars quakes that could be located here.

location

The Cerberus Fossae cut through the Tartarus Mountains, which run from northeast to southwest. To the southwest lies the Athabasca Valles outflow valley system .
