Peter Rothe (geologist)

Peter Rothe (born August 2, 1936 in Berlin ) is a German emeritus professor of geology at the University of Mannheim .

He studied in Frankfurt am Main and Munich and received his doctorate in 1965 with a thesis on the Canaries . He then worked as an assistant at the University of Heidelberg and Unesco expert on the water development program in the Canary Islands. After his habilitation in 1972 on deep-sea sediments from the Cape Verde and Canary Islands, he worked for many years in the international deep-sea drilling program . From 1975 to 2001 he was a full professor at the University of Mannheim, from 1982 to 1985 also prorector.

Peter Rothe is editor of the collection of geological guides and author of several geological books. His book Earth History. Searching for traces in rocks was named Science Book of the Year in 2001 by the magazine Bild der Wissenschaft . Since 2005 he has been working full-time at the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen Mannheim. Since 2006 he has been organizing a series of lectures on geology there. From 1990 he was editor of the communications of the Upper Rhine Geological Association , of which he has been an honorary member since 2006.

Peter Rothe has been married to the contralto Ortrun Wenkel since 1966 .
