Henning Illies

Jürgen Henning Illies (born March 14, 1924 in Hamburg ; † August 2, 1982 ) was a German geologist and university professor.

Illies studied geology at the University of Halle and the University of Hamburg , where he received his doctorate in 1948 and completed his habilitation in 1951 . Then he was a lecturer in Hamburg and Freiburg im Breisgau and professor of geology at the University of Valdivia in Chile before becoming a professor at the TH Karlsruhe . There he was director of the geological institute.

Illies dealt in particular with the geology of the Upper Rhine Graben (where he worked in Karlsruhe with the professor of geophysics Stephan Mueller and his successor Karl Fuchs ) and in general with rift fractures and the geology of Chile .

In 1981 he received the Hans Stille Medal . 1964 to 1971 he was chairman of the Upper Rhine Geological Association . He had been a member of the Leopoldina since 1973 .
