Theodor Engel (born November 20, 1842 in Eschenbach , † January 29, 1933 in Eislingen ) was a German Protestant theologian , geologist and paleontologist .

Life

Engel, son of pastor Johann Christian Engel, attended the lyceum in Esslingen and then the Latin school in Göppingen . From 1860 he studied theology , philosophy and general natural sciences and geology with Friedrich August von Quenstedt at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . In 1866 Engel received his doctorate with a dissertation on the mystic Johannes Scottus Eriugena .

theologian

His first job as a clergyman was in Biberach as a vicar and parish administrator. Other places of activity were Heubach , Kohlberg , Würtingen , Laufen , Glatten and as a pastor in Ettlenschieß .

geologist

As a paleontologist and student of Quenstedt ( Quenstedt's structure of the main layers of the Jura rocks , which was only replaced by a new international structure in 1973), Engel continued his tradition of excursion guides to fossil deposits, but, in contrast to FA Quenstedt, he made geological excursions in Swabia. (Laupp, Tübingen 1864) placed greater emphasis on popular science communication.

In 60 years Theodor Engel collected a large number of rocks, fossils , ammonites , conchiles , minerals and plants. His fossil collection gives an almost complete overview of the fauna of the Jurassic Sea as well as that of the earth's history.

Engel was a co-founder of the Swabian Alb Association and publisher of its papers for the Swabian Alb Association .

The Municipal Museum of Natural History , founded in Göppingen-Jebenhausen in 1970 , was part of the private collection of the Natural History Museum Dr. Angel out.

Engel was married to Klementine Tritschler. His grave is in the cemetery in Eislingen (south) and bears the inscription: "Theolog und Geolog".
