Otto Franz Geyer

Otto Franz Geyer (born May 18, 1924 in Bergreichenstein ; † November 12, 2002 in Staufen im Breisgau ) was a German geologist and paleontologist .

After high school and military service in World War II as a first lieutenant in the tank destroyers, he studied biology at the University of Stuttgart from 1946 , but shortly afterwards switched to geology and paleontology. In 1953 he received his doctorate in Stuttgart and in 1959 he completed his habilitation. Afterwards he was a scientific assistant in Stuttgart and from 1967 until his retirement in 1989 he was professor of historical geology and stratigraphy in Stuttgart. Even after his retirement he remained scientifically active.

Around 117 scientific publications come from him. He supervised 25 doctoral students. In addition to Baden-Württemberg, he conducted field research in Spain, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and the Southern Alps. With Manfred Gwinner he wrote a standard work on the geology of Baden-Württemberg. He published among other things on stratigraphy and ammonites of the White Jura , the type locality of the Pliensbachian in Pliensbach and the ammonite family Perisphinctidae .

In 2001 he became an honorary member of the Upper Rhine Geological Association and the Society for Natural History in Württemberg .
