Franz Waldemar Kirchheimer (born July 1, 1911 in Müllheim (Baden) , † June 17, 1984 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German geologist and paleontologist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Kirchh. ".

Life

After studying at the Georg-August University in Göttingen , Franz Kirchheimer received his doctorate on a botanical topic in 1933. For political reasons, however, he was removed from university that same year, and his post- doctoral thesis on plant residues in German lignite, which he submitted in 1935, was not recognized by the University of Cologne . Until the end of the war in 1945, Kirchheimer worked mainly in coal science and published 90 articles on palaeobotanical topics. Subsequently, the University of Giessen awarded him the title of full professor , and the universities of Freiburg , Heidelberg and Stuttgart appointed him honorary professor .

From 1947 to 1952 he was director of the Baden geological state institute and until 1975 president of its successor authority, the state geological office of Baden-Württemberg . During this time, gold and uranium exploration in Baden-Württemberg in particular became a further focus of interest, and he was also very active as a numismatist, focusing on mining and river gold coins in southwest Germany.

He also wrote a history of the prehistory of the State Geological Office in the 19th century.

From 1975 to 1979 Kirchheimer was a professor at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität in Heidelberg.

Honors and memberships

In 1957 Kirchheimer was appointed a member of the Leopoldina and the Royal Botanical Society of Edinburgh. Since 1960 he has been a full member of the scientific and mathematical section of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences , since 1966 a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and since 1974 a corresponding member of the Senckenberg Natural Research Society . Kirchheimer was offered honorary membership of the German Geological Society in 1973 and of the Upper Rhine Geological Association in 1976 .

A mineral from the uranium mica series , Kirchheimerite or Metakirchheimerite, is named after Franz Kirchheimer .
