Wilhelm Schmidle (born February 9, 1860 in St. Peter , Black Forest , † December 1, 1951 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German educator, botanist and geologist. He was a leading algae expert in his day . His official botanical author name is " Schmidle ".

After graduating from high school (1870), Schmidle studied natural sciences (physics and mathematics) at the University of Freiburg at the Berthold-Gymnasium Freiburg. After passing the state examination for higher education, he continued his studies at the University of Berlin. In 1885 he was a teaching trainee at the grammar school in Baden-Baden and from 1890 grammar school professor in Müllheim / Baden and from 1892 to 1902 in Mannheim. From 1902 to 1907 he was director of the teachers 'college in Meersburg with an attached boarding school and then until 1909 director of the teachers' college in Karlsruhe. From 1909 to 1924 he taught at the Zeppelin secondary school in Konstanz and was director of the Schloss Salem school from 1924 . After retiring in 1930, he moved to Günterstal near Freiburg.

Schmidle was internationally known as an expert on algae at the turn of the century. Later, when he found less and less time for scientific botany in his school career, he became a leading expert in the geology and hydrology of Lake Constance (especially geomorphology, glacial geology, molasse stratigraphy, tectonics, Hegau volcanism). His friendship with the Baden state geologist Ferdinand Schalch and with the geologist Wilhelm Deecke played a role.

From 1920 to 1930 he was Vice President of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings , which made him an honorary member in 1930. In 1930 he became an honorary member of the Upper Rhine Geological Society and in 1940 an honorary member of the Badisches Landesverein für Naturkunde und Naturschutz eV Freiburg i.Br. In 1920 he received an honorary doctorate in Freiburg. Since 1934 he was an extraordinary member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

His algae collection went to the ETH Zurich .
