Study area

The publications of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its surroundings do not have a clearly defined study area, but are open to all contributions that have a relation to Lake Constance and its shoreline landscapes. In the bibliographic collection of regional studies literature, the following areas are counted for the Lake Constance region (from the north clockwise): the southern district Sigmaringen (room Pfullendorf ), the Lake District , the district of Ravensburg , the district of Lindau , the country Vorarlberg , the Principality of Liechtenstein , the northern and eastern cantons of St. Gallen (in the south to Sargans ), the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden , Appenzell Innerrhoden , Thurgau and Schaffhausen , the district of Constance .

history

1869 to 1918

When the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings was founded in 1868, no regular association magazine was initially planned, because the printing could not have been financed from membership fees alone. In the following year, however, public grants enabled the association to begin printing its writings. The editor was the Lindau pastor Gustav Reinwald , who won his father-in-law Johann Thomas Stettner as a publisher. In the early decades, the pile dwellings on Lake Constance were a focus, as were the Roman sites as well as local and personal histories from the Middle Ages and early modern times; in the natural history part, geological contributions predominated. The document registers from archives around Lake Constance, which appeared as supplements in the 1870s and 1880s, are a valuable aid to this day.

In the 1890s, contributions to prehistoric and Roman topics declined sharply; most of the historical contributions since then have dealt with the Middle Ages and the early modern period. In the natural science part, limnology became important, a science that was new at the time, which for the first time did not analyze the lake from individual points of view, but understood it as a coherent ecosystem. The impetus came from the innovative research of François-Alphonse Forel on Lake Geneva . They prompted the association's president, Count Eberhard von Zeppelin, to encourage the governments of the five states on the shores of Lake Constance - the Austro-Hungarian monarchy , the kingdoms of Bavaria and Württemberg , the Grand Duchy of Baden and the Swiss Confederation - to undertake precise measurements and scientific research on Lake Constance. Their results, the Lake Constance research , appeared between 1893 and 1902 as supplements to the publications.

From 1901 onwards, Rudolf Huber's writings were printed in Frauenfeld. Since good paper was available in Switzerland, the fonts could also appear in good quality during the First World War . The annual journal for 1918, an opulent commemorative publication for the 50th anniversary of the association, brought the association to the brink of ruin because the association's treasury was kept in the worthless German mark currency , but the printing had to be paid for in Swiss francs of stable value .

1918 to 1948

In the first post-war years, the writings no longer appeared regularly; they were also mostly narrow and printed on poor paper. After the currency reform of 1923 and the assumption of editorial management by the Vorarlberg state archivist Viktor Kleiner , an appreciation took place from 1925 onwards. The historical contributions of these years deal with roughly the same range of topics as before the war and hardly reveal any search for new areas of knowledge. In contrast, the scientific part benefited from the new research facilities at the lake, namely the "Institute for Lake Research the city of Constance" , the "Association of Lake Research and lake management" in Langenargen and private "Biogeologischen station Moss laugh" at Wasserburg by the Austrian botanist Helmut Gams , further nor the "kite station on Lake Constance" (since 1933 "aerological observatory") in Friedrichshafen .

As a reaction to the National Socialist " seizure of power ", the Bodensee-Geschichtsverein declared itself ideologically neutral. His writings remained largely free of ideology and provided a forum for opponents of National Socialism such as Fritz Harzendorf or Helmut Wolfgang Faißt. After the beginning of the war, the publications were classified by the “Wirtschaftsstelle des Deutschen Buchhandels” as “Heimatschrifts” that were not important to the war effort and were generally excluded from the allocation of paper. The editor and vice president of the association, Bruno Leiner from Konstanz , referred to the Foreign Office about the importance of the writings for the cultural exchange between Germany and Switzerland; With this he achieved that two years could still be printed during the war.

1949 until today

Since the year 1949/50, the fonts have been appearing again on an annual basis. In the post-war decades, the late Middle Ages and the early modern period as well as the decades around 1800 dominated thematically; A number of large art-historical essays are of lasting value. More recently, the writings have benefited from historical and scientific research at the University of Konstanz , founded in 1966 , which opened up new subject areas. The Medievalist Arno Borst from Constance started . Early modern research contributed the results of a project on “Regional Transformation of Economy and Society” ( Horst Rabe , Frank Göttmann , Jörn Sieglerschmidt). Since the 1980s, there have been an increasing number of articles on the 19th century and, since the 1990s, on the 20th century. Since then, the relationship between the premodern and the 1800's has been roughly balanced. In the natural science part, the focus is on limnology, not least thanks to contributions from the limnological institute of the University of Konstanz. The fonts have been published by Jan Thorbecke Verlag ( Schwabenverlag Group ) since 2004 .

The editors

Accompanying publications

In addition to the above-mentioned registers and limnological research on Lake Constance, 9 not consistently numbered, mostly monographic special volumes of the writings were published. Between 1937 and 1955 the association published the Heimatkundliche Mitteilungen as a supplement to the writings . They should appear quarterly and contain small contributions, club news and event information. The Second World War and the obstacles of the post-war period prevented the development of this series.
