Friedrich Schaltegger (born June 27, 1851 in Littenheid , today the municipality of Sirnach in Thurgau ; † September 23, 1936 there ) was a Swiss Protestant pastor, archivist, librarian and historian.

life and work

Friedrich Schaltegger's father Ulrich Schaltegger (1818–1901) was a teacher at the institution for the deaf and dumb (now a school for the deaf and speech healing school) in Riehen near Basel , then for the longest part of his professional life he was a primary school teacher in Alterswilen , now the municipality of Kemmental in Thurgau, where Friedrich grew up; As an elderly man, he moved to Württemberg, his wife's home, as a preacher in 1894. Friedrich Schaltegger attended the canton school in Frauenfeld from 1866 ; then he studied history, philosophy and theology at the universities of Basel and Tübingen until 1874 . From 1874 to 1879 he was a Protestant pastor in Wald AR , until 1888 in Safien , today the municipality of Safiental GR, until 1901 in Berlingen TG . Then he ended the pastoral care due to a progressive hearing loss and worked from then on as a historian.

First, Schaltegger collected the Thurgau openings together with Johannes Meyer on behalf of the Swiss Lawyers' Association , took on occasional genealogical work, and organized the civil archives of Arbon , Bischofszell , Ermatingen and Frauenfeld . After the former French Empress Eugénie had given Arenenberg Castle to the Canton of Thurgau, Friedrich Schaltegger compiled an inventory and a museum guide. From 1908 on, he worked in the Thurgau State Archives , which he took over in 1911 after the death of Johannes Meyer, together with the management of the Thurgau Cantonal Library . In this position he continued the work started by Meyer on the Thurgauisches Urkundenbuch, well beyond his years of service; Ernst Leisi followed him in it.

Schaltegger worked from 1906 on the board of directors of the Historical Society of the Canton of Thurgau, from 1921 to 1925 as vice-president. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings . Also succeeding Johannes Meyer, he edited the writings of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings from 1912 to 1920 . During the First World War, Schaltegger managed to maintain the historical exchange across national borders at Lake Constance. In the inflation year 1923, the loss of value of the mark threatened to ruin the association; Schaltegger then collected donations in Swiss francs, which contributed to stabilization. Schaltegger's scientific oeuvre is dedicated to the history of Thurgau; He had special knowledge of legal history, especially of fishing.

Schaltegger spent his old age in his native Littenheid. The painter Emanuel Schaltegger was the son of a cousin of Friedrich Schaltegger.
