AR is the abbreviation for the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in Switzerland and is used to avoid confusion with other entries of the name Wald .

Wald is a municipality in the foothills of the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in Switzerland .

geography

Forest lies between Trogen and Heiden at almost 1000 m above sea level. M .; the highest point in the municipality is 1128 m above sea level. M. above the Chozeren, on the border with the Oberegg district ; the lowest point at 750 m above sea level. M. below the Rechberg am Moosbach.

The population of the village consisted mainly of families of embroidery farmers until around 1950. These farmers only owned small agricultural areas and also did embroidery in the cellar or in the extension of their house. With the crisis of hand embroidery between 1950 and 1970, many of these embroidery farmers gave up their profession, sold their machines and, due to a lack of employment, a slight exodus of residents began.

The municipality, which has municipal voting rights for foreigners, was named in 2011 by Secondos Plus as the “most foreigner-friendly municipality in Switzerland”.

After 1980, building activity began to rise thanks to the reduced building land. The population increased from 1980 (695 inhabitants) to the end of 2002 by around 29% to 896 inhabitants.

  • Johann Ulrich Schiess (1813–1883), President and conductor of the Appenzell Singers' Association, Federal Chancellor from 1848 to 1881, National Councilor from 1881 to 1883, was born in Wald
  • Johann Ulrich Meyer (1825–1868), doctor, cantonal councilor and national councilor, was born in Wald
  • Sebastian Buff (1829–1880), painter and draftsman, was born in Wald
  • Johann Konrad Sonderegger (1834–1885), merchant and consul, was born in Wald
  • Friedrich Schaltegger (1851–1936), later Thurgau canton archivist and librarian, was pastor in Wald from 1874–1879
  • Jakob Vetsch (1879–1942), dialect researcher and writer, Dr. phil. I and Dr. iur., grew up in Wald, later did linguistic work on the local dialect, as evidenced by audio documents today
  • Peter Glotz (1939–2005), German politician, bought a historic factory owner's house in Wald and was buried here on September 12, 2005
  • Daniel Fehr, musician, played piano and banjo with the Minstrels , lives in Wald
