history
Reute was created due to the Appenzell land division in the course of the Reformation. Individual congregations had stayed with the old faith , others had turned to the new faith . When the canton of Appenzell was divided into a Catholic and a Reformed canton in 1597, the Catholic majority of Hirschberg wanted to stay near Innerrhoden, while the Reformed minority wanted to go to Ausserrhoden. In the land division letter it was therefore stipulated that property belonging to Reformed families belonged to Ausserrhoden. The Reformed community that emerged from this division was now called Reute .
