The Hochbrücke is an arch bridge in Baden , Switzerland . It was opened in 1926, is 275 meters long and has a main span of 72 meters. It spans the Limmat River at a height of 24 meters . It connects the Schulhausplatz south of the old town, the city's most important traffic junction, with Wettingerstrasse and the Baden Cantonal School on the right side of the river. Hauptstrasse 278 leads over the bridge . The high bridge is one of the oldest bridges in Switzerland that was built from reinforced concrete .

history

Due to the rapid growth of the electrical engineering company Brown, Boveri & Cie. (today Asea Brown Boveri ) there were fewer and fewer building land reserves in Baden for the construction of houses, which is why the population growth spread to the neighboring communities, especially Wettingen . The wooden bridge at the bailiff's palace , built in 1810, was hardly able to cope with the rapidly increasing traffic, as it could only be reached via steep and narrow access roads. The Leaning Bridge, which is better suited for through traffic, required a long detour.

In 1914, plans for the construction of a new bridge appeared for the first time, to be built around 100 meters south of the wooden bridge and to span the entire valley of the Limmat. In 1921 project work was resumed. In 1922, the community assembly rejected the proposed iron construction project. In the following year, the authorities decided on a reinforced concrete bridge and announced a competition in which ten companies took part. The contract was awarded the Rothpletz, Lienhard & Cie . from Aarau .

Construction began in November 1924 and was completed on October 13, 1926; the cost was 1.54 million francs. On this day the wooden bridge could be closed to through traffic. From 1991 to 1994 the high bridge was extensively renovated and widened to create space for an additional bus lane and cycle lane .

In August 2017, the high bridge was the main venue for the Badenfahrt 2017. For ten days, the festival center was one of the main attractions with around 1.3 million visitors. The building complex was then dismantled, loaded and sold to Berlin, where it will be used for an art exhibition.
