The Schiefe Brücke is a bridge over the Limmat in Switzerland and connects Baden with Ennetbaden . It was opened in 1874 and has been closed to private motorized traffic since 2006. It got its name because it has an incline of 7.5% in order to compensate for the difference in altitude between the banks of Baden and the banks of the Ennetbaden nine meters below. The composite steel - truss bridge is about 60 meters long and 10 meters wide.

history

There has been a ferry between Baden and Ennetbaden since the Middle Ages . It was mainly used to transport the spa guests between the "large baths" on the left and the "small baths" on the right bank (see Baden thermal baths ). In addition to the low political influence of the Ennetbaden residents, the lack of a permanent river crossing was another reason that led to the establishment of an independent municipality in 1819. In 1817 various bathers from Ennetbaden approached the government of the canton of Aargau and petitioned the construction of a covered wooden bridge. The Baden city council, actually responsible, was angry that it had been passed over and was only willing to finance a nearly 2.5-meter-wide pedestrian walkway. This was built in 1818, non- residents had to pay a bridge toll.

After five decades, flood damage made it necessary to renew the footbridge. In 1869, the meeting of the Ennetbaden bathing hosts submitted two projects, whereupon the cantonal building department in Aarau prepared implementation plans and cost calculations. The canton shared 40% of the construction costs of 110,000 francs, and the municipalities of Baden, Ennetbaden, Obersiggenthal and Untersiggenthal 60%. Construction began in 1871 but stalled due to flooding that year. It was not until 1874 that the Leaning Bridge was opened to traffic. The additional costs amounted to 67,000 francs and were not paid until 1881.

Over the decades, the bridge had to be reinforced several times in order to meet the demands of the growing volume of traffic. Simultaneously with the opening of the bypass road through the Goldwand tunnel in Ennetbaden, the Leaning Bridge was closed to cars and trucks on November 8, 2006. Since then, it has been used for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, and the buses of the Baden-Wettingen regional transport company continue to use it . It was completely renovated from April to November 2008.
