Stein is a municipality in the hinterland of the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in Switzerland .
geography
The community lies on a hill between the rivers Urnäsch in the west and Sitter in the east. Neighboring communities are St. Gallen , Teufen , Schlatt-Haslen (AI), Hundwil and Herisau . Stein lies at an altitude of 593 m above sea level. M. (at the Sitter Viaduct ) to 868 m (in Högg).
history
The community separated from Hundwil in 1748/49 and was named after the 'Uf Stein' corridor, where the original church building was planned. This was moved to its current location due to a lack of water. The cast iron, two-jet fountain of the water cooperation village still reminds of this fact today.

Attractions
- Village center from the 18th century with a church by Jakob and Hans Ulrich Grubenmann , built in 1749, renovated in 1832/1833 (from this time also the stucco and pulpit and font by Gebhard Moosbrugger). In the church there is a baroque communion chalice by the goldsmith "TS" in Herisau
- Show dairy of Appenzell cheese
- Appenzell Folklore Museum with looms and embroidery machines from the 19th century.
- Between the hamlet of Störgel and the St. Gallen district of Haggen lies the Haggen Bridge , the highest pedestrian walkway in Europe, which spans the Sitter Gorge, which is 355 meters wide, at a height of 99 meters (built in 1937). The structure called “Ganggelibrugg” (wobbly bridge) was actually planned for traffic between Stein and St. Gallen, but it could never be handed over to its actual purpose due to serious structural defects. For a long time it was the most widely used bridge for suicide in Switzerland . Since the last renovation in 2009/2010, the bridge has been secured with nets that help prevent such tragedies.
- Covered wooden bridge ( Kubelbrücke , also known as the "speaking bridge") over the Urnäsch (river) in the hamlet of Kubel, built by Hans Ulrich Grubenmann.
- Covered wooden bridge (Äbtebrücke) over the river Sitter in the hamlet of Kubel, built by the St.Gallen monastery.
- Covered wooden bridges (Hüsli bridges) over the Sitter and Wattbach below the “Ganggelibrugg” in the hamlet of Blatten / Zweibruggen.
