Live and act

Otto Paul Clavadetscher was born in 1919 to Peter Clavadetscher and his wife Fanny, née Meier, in the hinterland of the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden . Nothing is known about his youth. He graduated from high school in Trogen in 1938 . He then studied history and German at the University of Zurich from the winter semester of 1938 to the summer semester of 1943 . In 1943 he received the diploma for the higher teaching post in history and German from the University of Zurich. Two years later he received his doctorate there with the work of Hans Nabholz on the history of the Cistercian abbey in Kappel am Albis . Clavadetscher had to interrupt his studies several times in order to do his active service.

During his studies he met his fellow student Jeannette von Tscharner, whom he married in 1946. The couple moved to Zuoz GR . There he took up a position as a teacher at the Lyceum Alpinum . The couple subsequently had four children. The family then moved to the lowlands. Clavadetscher taught from 1959 at the Mariaberg teacher training college in Rorschach and later until 1984 history at the St. Gallen Cantonal School . From 1963 the family lived in Trogen (Appenzell Ausserrhoden). In addition to his teaching activities, he worked as a part-time judge from 1965 to 1985. From 1980 to 1985 he was President of the Upper Court of the Canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden.

As a historian, he was interested in the Middle Ages. In the course of time he dealt with the Graubünden region , eastern Switzerland , the Lake Constance area , the state of Vorarlberg and, most recently, the Principality of Liechtenstein . Among other things, he wrote pioneering works on the history of the empire in the early Middle Ages. As a result, he was accepted as one of the few Swiss in the Constance Working Group for Medieval History (since April 1981). Furthermore, he wrote the Castle Book of Graubünden and wrote numerous constitutional and legal history texts.

For a long time Clavadetscher was active as an editor of documents and edited thousands of documents from parish, parish, monastery, city and state archives in Europe. He often received support from his wife. Since 1991 he has worked on several volumes of the Bündner Urkundenbuch . Since 1974 he has been the editor and later with Stefan Sonderegger , the city archivist of the St. Gallen community, co-editor of the St. Gallen document book Chartularium Sangallense - in this position he worked until his death. As part of his duties, he created registers and corrected proofs right up to the end. With his edition he made numerous sources on St. Gallen easily accessible to scientists.

In 1981 he became a corresponding member of the commission for historical regional studies in Baden-Württemberg . In 1989 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in law from the University of St. Gallen and was dedicated to Festschrifts in 1984 and 1994.
