history

Individual farms have been mentioned since 900 and were handed down in 1268 with the name Schwellbrunnen. As part of the Rhode and parish of Herisau, the village joined the Reformation in 1529. Only after the church was built near the Hofstatt and the political separation from Herisau in 1648 did a real street village emerge along the main road from St. Gallen to Toggenburg . It remained largely unchanged until the 20th century and has therefore become a site of national importance. The new community organized itself in an upper and lower group, which alternately provided the community governor until 1818. The old division of the community lived on in the names of the two reading societies, which until the year 2000 together with the agricultural and alpine farming association and the Trade association formed the most important political and cultural associations. In the 19th century, there was also a pronounced singing culture. With the establishment of an SVP section in the 1990s, the local bourgeois party of the FDP also gained in importance, and a section of the Social Democrats was added in 2010.

The new construction of the main road from Herisau to Toggenburg via Waldstatt in 1789 met with resistance in Schwellbrunn, because it put the village on the sidelines in terms of traffic and initiated its economic and demographic decline. The majority of the rural population took part in the boom in the textile industry around 1800, and individual manufacturers and merchants gained importance in the cotton industry. In addition, the Schwellbrunners lived mainly from butter and cheese production, beekeeping and the export of charcoal wood. In 1871 an embroidery factory was established, and from 1880 Schwellbrunn developed into a climatic health resort. In the 1930s, the previous main occupations of weaving and embroidery almost completely disappeared. Since then, the community has been characterized by cattle and dairy farming, the largest cattle show in the canton takes place in the village. Ski lifts have been in operation in the municipality since 1970. Thanks to its quiet location with a view, the village was valued as a place to live, and the population has increased again since around 1980. In 2017 Schwellbrunn was voted the “most beautiful village in Switzerland”.

The fistball team , which was founded by some members of the gymnastics club in 1981 , now appears under the name of Faustball Schwellbrunn and played successfully in the National League A.

tourism

Schwellbrunn originally had two bow ski lifts; the Landscheide ski lift (1022 m) - Sitz (1084 m) with a length of 340 m and the Löschwendi (852 m) - Risi (1035 m) ski lift with a length of 750 m, which were connected by two pony lifts. The Löschwendi - Risi ski lift and the connecting lifts were temporarily shut down due to the increasingly poor snow conditions in recent winters. The final decommissioning (including subsequent dismantling) took place at the end of the 2014/15 season; the Landscheide - Sitz ski lift will continue to operate. In addition to the ski lifts, a separate toboggan run is being prepared below the village in the area with the field name “Bühel”.

In summer, the idyllic and varied landscape is ideal for hiking tourism. The hiking trail network includes a section of the Schwabenweg . In addition, there are two themed trails, the “Culture Trail” and the “Riddle Trail”.
