Herschberg is a municipality in the Südwestpfalz district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Thaleischweiler-Wallhalben community . Herschberg is a state-approved tourist destination .

Herschberg is located in the southwest of Rhineland-Palatinate on the Sickinger Höhe , which is named after the knight Franz von Sickingen .

Denominations
At the end of 2014, 61.8% of the population were Protestant and 29.0% Catholic. The rest belonged to another religion or were non-denominational.
Jewish community
In the 19th century there was a relatively large Jewish community in Herschberg. Its origins go back to the 18th century. In 1747 a Jewish cemetery was laid out, which still exists today. In 1801 there were 50 Jewish people living there; In 1848 the highest number of Jewish community members was reached with 170, this was about 25% of the population. A synagogue was first mentioned in 1815, and a new one was established in 1830. In September 1892 a new synagogue was inaugurated again.
As a result of emigration and emigration, the number of Jewish residents has decreased so much since around 1880 that the community was dissolved as early as 1905/10. The former synagogue was converted into a residential building, which was demolished in 1999. The last two Jewish residents perished after their deportation in 1940 .

Andreas Schneider became the local mayor of Herschberg on August 13, 2019. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was elected for five years with 56.49% of the vote. Schneider's predecessors were Manfred Biedinger and Lydia Westrich .

dialect
The Verbandsgemeinde Thaleischweiler-Wallhalben dedicates itself intensively to the maintenance of the Palatinate dialect and has organized the Sickinger dialect contest every two years since 1991, the final round including the award ceremony in the Bürgerhalle Herschberg . Divisions are dialect poetry and prose .
horse race
In 1911, the Sickingerhöhe riding club was founded in Herschberg , which also held the first horse race at that time . Under the name Meilbächel Race , it took place every year until 2010, not on a circuit, but up the valley and in the classic English way "from point to point".
Nature experience
The Herschberg Forest Museum is permanently closed due to the lack of fire protection. In addition, a water viewing trail and the Mühlenweg , which connects the communities in the Wallhalb area, run near Herschberg . The water viewing path is shown on various hiking maps, the sections start at different locations (e.g. Herschberg, Saalstadt). Information boards set up describe the history, nature and importance of the sights along the way. The managed former Weihermühle can serve as a rest station.
Economy and Infrastructure
Herschberg lives mainly from tourism as well as from agriculture and forestry .
In terms of traffic, the community is connected to the motorway 62 ( Pirmasens - Trier ) via the Weselberg junction 6 km to the north-east , which also provides extensive connections to the A 6 in the north and the B 10 in the south.
Herschberg has a large leisure complex that offers a mini golf course, tennis courts and a children's playground.

Honorary citizen
- Klaus G. Juner (born September 30, 1928; † October 27, 2016), local author and genealogist, was made an honorary citizen on November 1, 2009 in recognition of his diverse commitment to the community.
