About this picture
Darstein - view from the Hahnenstein

Darstein is a municipality in the district of Südwestpfalz in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Hauenstein , within which it is the second smallest local community in terms of population.

geography

The small community is located in the east of the Südwestpfalz district, right on the border with the Südliche Weinstrasse district . It lies between Pirmasens and Bad Bergzabern in the Dahner Felsenland in Wasgau , as the southern part of the Palatinate Forest and the adjoining northern part of the Vosges are also called. 61.2% of the district area is forested. Neighboring communities are - clockwise - Schwanheim , Dimbach , Gossersweiler-Stein , Vorderweidenthal and Oberschlettenbach . The Rimbach rises in the north-west of the district.

history

Darstein belonged to the domain of Lindelbrunn Castle of the Leininger family . The castle ruins are located above the village.

The name of the place probably goes back to Heinricus dictus Darstein de Büdenkeim, who is mentioned in 1309. In 1386 sources mention the name Daxstein, which is probably based on a typo. Because in 1411 the personal name Henne Darstein is recorded and in 1428 as the place name again Darstein. Until the end of the 18th century the community belonged to the Prince of Leiningen-Dürkheim .

From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , Darrstein was - as the spelling at the time - incorporated into the canton of Annweiler and was subordinate to the Mairie Oberschlettenbach . In 1815 the place had a total of 97 inhabitants. In 1815 the place Austria was added. Just one year later, the community moved to the Kingdom of Bavaria . From 1818 to 1862 the place was part of the Landkommissariat Bergzabern , which was then converted into a district office.

In 1928 Darstein had 157 residents who lived in 38 residential buildings. While the nearby Catholic Hauenstein developed into a bastion against National Socialism in 1933, the Protestant Darsteiners, according to the analysis by Theo Schwarzmüller, were the first parish in Germany to vote in the Reichstag election in 1930 - with all 106 voters - for the NSDAP . The village was then made an honorary member of the NSDAP. On this occasion, the former Postlandweg in the Müggelheim district of Berlin's Treptow-Köpenick district was given the name Darsteiner Weg on June 13, 1936 .

In 1939 the place was incorporated into the Bergzabern district. After the Second World War , Dimbach became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . In the following period the SPD became the dominant party in Darstein, but in the Rhineland-Palatinate state elections in 1967, the NPD received almost half of the votes in town. In the course of the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform , the place moved in 1969 to the district of Pirmasens (from 1997 district of Südwestpfalz ) . Three years later it was incorporated into the newly created community of Hauenstein .

religion

In 2012, 60% of the population were Protestant and 19% Catholic. The rest belonged to other religions or were non-denominational. The Catholics belong to the Diocese of Speyer , the Evangelicals to the Protestant Church of the Palatinate .

coat of arms

Darstein coat of arms
Blazon : "Divided obliquely by blue and silver, on the top right a red-armored silver eagle, on the bottom left a floating, straight-armed, touched blue cross angled by four red spheres."

It was approved by the Neustadt district government in 1984 .

Reasons for the coat of arms: The eagle refers to the former belonging to the Leiningen family . The lower half of the coat of arms shows the seal of Mayor Stoffel von Darstein from 1750.
