The next larger city is Pirmasens , located to the southwest . The municipality of Leimen is 500 meters above sea level, making it the highest resort in the Palatinate. The Schamborner Valley is located south of the settlement area. Leimen also includes the Röderhof hamlet and the Forsthaus Leimen residential area . Neighboring communities are - clockwise - Heltersberg , Trippstadt , Wilgartswiesen , Merzalben and Clausen .

Surveys

Immediately north of the settlement area, the 473-meter-high Behetztköpfel extends ; northwest of it is the 451 meter high Kemmeterberg . The Schmale Kopf (499.2 meters) rises to the west of the district and the 522.3 meters high Kippkopf to the south . Waters

The Rauschenbach rises to the north-west of the development and flows into the Schwarzbach from the left . The latter takes the horse brook from the left , which forms the northern border between Leimen and Trippstadt. The latter function is immediately taken over by the Schwarzbach, which then also forms the border with Heltersberg. It flows through the Schwarzbachtalweiher immediately at the district triangle of the said municipalities ; The Hölzenklingbächel opens in this area from the left ; a short time later it takes up the Ramschelbach and the Schleifenbächel , also from the left . history

A Celtic grave near the Röderhof suggests that the area in the area of today's Leimen was originally inhabited by Celts . It can be assumed that the place Leimen existed before the rule of Graefenstein . The first documentary mention of Leimen took place on May 27, 1152, when Pope Eugene III. the abbot Wolfram and the canons of the church St. Maria zu Wadgassen took under his protection and confirmed all their possessions. The text of the document in Latin in the cartular of the Wadgassen Abbey (Landeshauptarchiv Koblenz B 218 No. 603) reads as follows according to different prints, whereby the print from 1750 brings the word Leimam (glue), the print from 1850 the word decimam ( tithing):

“In Heseningen mansum unum, et Leimam, quam habetis ab ecclesia de Herbodesheim. Sub censu septem solidorum eidem ecclesiae a vobis vestrisque successoribus annis singulis persolvendo. "

“In Hesemingen mansum unum et decimam quam habetis from ecclesia de Herbodesheim. sub censu septem solidorum eidem ecclesie a uobis uestrisque successoribus annis singulis persoluendo. "

After the older pressure, the Wadgassen Abbey had acquired glue from Herbitzheim Monastery for a hereditary annual rate of seven solidi. Despite the remoteness of its geographical location, Leimen is one of the settlements in Westrich mentioned in documents as early as the 12th century . There is no news about when the Herbitzheim Monastery was founded or acquired. It is likely that the place was founded as the outer courtyard of the Herbitzheim Monastery on a relatively fertile plateau, which is rich in clay. Leimen belonged to the Bliesgau and the diocese of Metz .

Leimen belonged to the margraviate of Baden from 1560 to the end of the 18th century with the rule of Graefenstein . With the Thirty Years' War great suffering and misery came over the area. Leimen was almost extinct. In 1653 three citizens lived here. The old church had fallen apart. It was not thoroughly repaired until 1700.

From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , Laimen was - as the spelling at the time - incorporated into the canton of Waldfischbach and was subordinate to Mairie Merzalben . In 1815 the place had 340 inhabitants. in the same year, the place was initially added to Austria . A year later the place changed to the Kingdom of Bavaria . From 1818 to 1862 the place was part of the Landkommissariat Pirmasens , which was then converted into a district office.

In 1939 Leimen was incorporated into the district of Pirmasens (from 1997 district of Südwestpfalz ) . After the Second World War , the municipality within the French occupation zone became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate. In 1970 the community was named a "state-approved resort". In the course of the first administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate , it was assigned to the newly created Verbandsgemeinde Rodalben in 1972 .

religion

In the Middle Ages, a church that had existed for centuries was a symbol of the place. It is believed that it was built around 1350. In 1413 the chapel was given the patronage of “Our Lady”. This emerges from a document dated July 8, 1413.

"The mayor and council of the city of Annweiler certify that in court proceedings Claus Zolner and his housewife Demut, Bürgerin zu Annweiler, have prescribed an annual martini gul of a simmering oil for the brothers of our dear women in Leymen for 24 pfennigs and pledged the following properties." . "

Dieze Lauwer as well as the mayor and the council of Annweiler have sealed.

Catholic Parish Church of St. Catherine

The church was at the entrance to the village. According to ancient traditions, the chapel was visited by pilgrims from near and far. However, nowhere is it written that it was a pilgrimage chapel. In 1467 a pastor Clingeler is mentioned in Leimen for the first time: "Peter Clingeler pastor at the Liebfrauenkirche zu Leymen". Leimen was later assigned to the Speyer diocese . The year 1723 saw the separation of the villages of Leimen and Merzalben from the previous mother church, Rodalben. In 1782 the foundation stone was laid for a new church in the middle of the village. It was not until 1864 that Leimen was declared an independent parish.

The last expositus - that is, a chaplain "postponed" by the parish of Merzalben - Josef Ulrich became the first own pastor of Leimen. At that time the village had 547 souls. The church in the center of the village, built in 1782, served the community as a place of worship for 150 years until the third place of worship was built and consecrated in 1932. The current Catholic Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria has replaced the old church from 1350 as the symbol of the community.

At the end of 2014, 65.2 percent of the population were Catholic and 15.8 percent Protestant. The rest belonged to another religion or were non-denominational. The Catholics belong to the Diocese of Speyer , the Evangelicals to the Protestant Church of the Palatinate .
