Paul Thalheimer studied from 1906 to 1909 at the Art Academy in Stuttgart with Robert Poetzelberger and from 1908 to 1912 at the Munich Art Academy with Peter von Halm and Ludwig von Herterich . After graduating, he stayed in Munich.

He became a member of the Munich Secession and took part in art exhibitions, including in the Munich Glass Palace . He was also a member of the German Society for Christian Art in Munich. In 1928 he was appointed professor. In the same year he was represented with a picture at the Venice Biennale .

In 1937 his works were qualified as " Degenerate Art ", two of his works were confiscated in Munich museums and put on display at the "Degenerate Art" exhibition.

In 1938/39 Thalheimer created a monumental altarpiece in the Ludwigskirche Bad Dürkheim . It is a crucifixion scene. One of the criminals crucified next to Jesus clearly bears the facial features of Adolf Hitler . At that time it apparently remained undiscovered, which is why today the picture is one of the region's very special art treasures.

Before 1939 he visited the United States , where he met his fellow student from Munich Nelbert Chouinard (1879-1969) in Los Angeles . The American painter William Frederick Foster (1883–1953) painted his portrait there.

In 1953 a commemorative exhibition of his works took place in Munich.
