The vow Church Maria Schutz is a Roman Catholic parish and Sanctuary , Minoriten - monastery church and a cultural monument in Kaiserslautern .
history
The origin of the church building was a vow made by the Speyer bishop Michael Faulhaber at the outbreak of the First World War on August 2, 1914: to build a church of Maria Schutz if the Palatinate would not suffer serious damage. Faulhaber's successor Ludwig Sebastian fulfilled the promise with the help of numerous donations from the diocese.
On the property already acquired by the St. Antonius Church Building Association, the convent buildings for the Minorites were built in 1926/27. The foundation stone for the Church of Vows was laid on June 10, 1928. The plans came from Hans and Fritz Seeberger . The church was founded on October 20, 1929 consecrated . It was badly damaged during the Second World War in 1944 and restored in 1947/48.
Architecture and equipment
The Maria-Schutz-Kirche is a three-aisled basilica made of sandstone and brick in objectified Gothic forms . The most representative part of the church is the west building with the two high towers on a square floor plan with rich wall structuring. Above the three portals are sculptures of the patron saint Maria and, on behalf of the war opponents from 1914 to 1918, of the Archangel Michael and St. Louis of France .
The interior is framed in white and divided into the three naves with flat pointed arches. The nave has a flat roof, the choir has a pointed barrel vault . In the center of attention on the rear wall of the altar there is a large representation of the Madonna in the protective cloak , surrounded by eight smaller pictures of the Beatitudes of the Sermon on the Mount , executed in 1934 by Paul Thalheimer .
Church services
Holy masses are celebrated on Wednesdays and from Friday to Sunday . Pilgrimage days are mainly the Marian festivals in the annual cycle. They stand under the sign of the request for peace.
