Peter Halm , also Peter von Halm (born December 14, 1854 in Mainz ; † January 25, 1923 in Munich ), was professor of etching at the Munich Art Academy from 1901 to 1923. There he had been teaching since 1896 as an assistant teacher.

Life

Peter Halm, son of an innkeeper and brewer , wanted to become an architect and therefore attended the Polytechnic in Darmstadt . From 1875 he received lessons from Johann Leonhard Raab at the Munich Academy ( copperplate engraving ) and from Löfftz in general subjects. From 1883 to 1885 he lived in Berlin, where he came through his friend Karl Stauffer-Bern and where he (like Max Klinger ) participated in the graphic reproduction of old masters for the Royal Museums in Berlin directed by Wilhelm von Bode . During these years he took his younger brother, the later art historian Philipp Maria Halm , into his care.

In 1900 he became a professor at the Munich Academy and mainly trained graphic artists. In Munich he took over the management of Raab's class at the academy until the end of 1922, from which he left on January 1, 1923, seriously ill.

His complete graphic works and numerous drawings are in the holdings of the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München .

His son Georg Halm was an economist.

Works

Halm worked primarily as an eraser and is one of the artists who made this technique popular again in Germany as original artistic graphics at the end of the 19th century. He was one of the founding members of the Association for Original Etching in Munich. Before that, he worked with reproduction graphics based on the works of old masters, but also with contemporary art such as B. became famous for paintings by Max Liebermann . His actual work, however, was devoted to landscape and genre representation . Since 1887 he has been creating etchings of landscapes from the area around the island of Reichenau . City images, especially from Germany and Italy, were also the artist's motifs.
