Johann Leonhard Raab (born March 29, 1825 in Schwaningen near Ansbach , † April 2, 1899 in Munich ) was a German etcher , copper and steel engraver and painter.

Life

Raab received his training from Carl Mayer and Albert Christoph Reindel in Nuremberg , and from 1845 in Munich. Then he worked in Nuremberg. From 1869 to 1895 he was director of the copper engraving school at the Munich Art Academy and inspired the work of many of his students with his engravings, such as B. Max Barascudts , Constantin Bauer , Ignaz Gaugengigl , Peter Halm and Heinrich Strieffler . After his retirement, on the occasion of which he was awarded the title of a real secret councilor, the copper engraving school was closed as out of date.

Raab was married to Anna Elisabetha Sonnenleiter († 1863). The marriage resulted in three daughters, including Doris Raab (* 1851), whom he trained as a copperplate engraver and etcher. In 1865 he married Babette Grossmeyer.

Works

Raab made numerous engravings after paintings by old masters and by painters of the 19th century.
