history

The Benedictine abbey in the diocese of Metz was first mentioned in a document in 870 .

The Herbitzheimer Haufen played a notable role in the Peasants' War in 1525 . It got its name because the farmers of the Bliesgau and the upper Saar came to Herbitzheim to gather together. From here they moved to Zabern to come to the aid of the farmer's leader Erasmus Gerber . Most of them died in the process.

The monastery existed until 1544. In that year the last abbess transferred the monastery property to the Counts of Nassau-Saarbrücken. After a contract with the Duke of Lorraine in 1581, in which he gave up his rights to Herbitzheim, the property remained with the Counts of Saarbrücken until the French Revolution.
