Niederschlettenbach is a municipality in the district of Südwestpfalz in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Dahner Felsenland , which has its administrative seat in the city of Dahn and within which it is the fourth smallest local community both in terms of its number of inhabitants and in terms of area.

Niederschlettenbach is located in Wasgau , as the southern part of the Palatinate Forest and the adjoining northern part of the Vosges are also called, in the so-called Dahner Felsenland . Geologically, the Trifels layers dominate on site . Neighboring communities are - clockwise - Erlenbach bei Dahn , Bobenthal , Nothweiler and Bundenthal . Waters

history

The Codex Edelini reports on the consecration of the Laurentius Church in Slettenbach (Niederschlettenbach) in 1068 . An old gable stone with the dedication inscription from May 13, 1068 is walled in in the old choir. A Roman stone "Diana" from the late second or early third century is walled in on the east side of the tower.

From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , Niederschlettenbach was incorporated into the Canton of Dahn . From 1818 the place was part of the Landkommissariat Pirmasens , which was converted into a district office in 1862.

In 1939 Erlenbach was incorporated into the district of Pirmasens (from 1997 district of Südwestpfalz ) . The village was badly damaged during World War II . Many old half-timbered houses were destroyed. After the war, the municipality within the French occupation zone became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate. In the course of the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform , the community was assigned to the newly created community of Dahner Felsenland in 1972 .

In 2012, 67.6 percent of the population were Catholic and 16.2 percent Protestant. The rest belonged to another religion or were non-denominational. The Catholics belong to the Diocese of Speyer and are subordinate to the Deanery Pirmasens , the Evangelicals to the Protestant Church of the Palatinate .

Parish Church of St. Laurentius

There are a total of seven objects on site that are listed buildings. Among them is the Gothic St. Anna Chapel, one kilometer west of the settlement area of ​​Niederschlettenbach, which was built around 1400. The annual pilgrimage takes place on the Saturday after July 26th. In this chapel lie the bones of Hans Trapp , the knight from Berwartstein Castle († 1503). The place is dominated by the parish church of St. Laurentius with a Gothic choir around 1220 and 1230 and a tower from the 14th century. There is a medieval sundial on the tower.

There are a total of four knight stones on the parish of the municipality . Ritterstein 22 bears the inscription Glückauf L. v. Thomas Pietsch became local mayor of Niederschlettenbach on September 24, 2019, after he had achieved 91.5% of the vote in the repeat election two days earlier. This election had become necessary because in the direct election on May 26, 2019, the 35-year-old mayor Roman Mertz was the only candidate to miss the necessary majority with a share of 43.0% of the vote.

The state road 478 runs through Niederschlettenbach and runs in an easterly direction to Wissembourg and in the west, always not far from the border with France, via Hornbach into Saarland . Niederschlettenbach is five kilometers south of the federal highway 427 , which leads from Hinterweidenthal via Dahn and Bad Bergzabern to Kandel .

With the Pamina cycle path Lautertal , which runs from Hinterweidenthal to Neuburg am Rhein , a cycle path also leads through the district.
