The high school professor Christian Gustav Mehlis (born April 28, 1850 in Herschberg , † April 2, 1933 in Neustadt an der Haardt ) was a historian who preferred to deal with the history of the Palatinate .

education

Mehlis, son of pastor Gustav Adolf Mehlis (1807-1853), studied philology and archeology in Erlangen , Leipzig and Munich after graduating from high school . During his studies he became a member of the Germania Erlangen fraternity in the winter semester of 1867/68 .

Profession and scientific activity

As a student in 1874/75, Mehlis drew attention to himself when he first examined the Celtic ring wall Heidenmauer near Dürkheim . After completing his degree and doctorate , he worked in Neustadt an der Haardt, today Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, as a teacher of history and ancient languages at the Humanist Gymnasium , today's Kurfürst-Ruprecht-Gymnasium . In addition, from 1893 to 1924 he was chairman of the Beautification Association in Neustadt. He wrote more than two dozen books about his historical and geological studies.

Mehlis' private library with around 3000 volumes was taken over into the holdings of the Palatinate State Library in Speyer . In contrast, the Neustadt an der Haardt geological district collection, which emerged from his private geological collection, with almost 3,000 specimens of regional geological history since Mehlis' death has been lost. It was considered to be one of the largest geological regional collections in the Palatinate, possibly even all of Bavaria , to which the Palatinate belonged at that time.
