Prehistory of the division of land

In the early 16th century, the Reformation found its first supporters in what was then the canton of Appenzell, especially in the western and northern areas of the canton ("outer Rhodes "). When the Catholics in the capital Appenzell asked the Reformed to either give up their faith or to move away, they tried to exclude the Reformed from government - they were entitled to do so by law.

The Outer Rhodes agreed to a land division in an extraordinary rural community from 1597, the Kirchhöri Appenzell a few weeks later. Course of the border

The borderline was determined according to denominational criteria. The majority of the newly created canton border coincided with the border of a Rhode (most of the Rhodes later became the municipalities of the same name).

In some cases the farms were assigned to their owning families according to the denomination ( Trogen , Oberegg ). In Hirschberg the division was not determined geographically, but the farms belonged to either Ausserrhoden ( Reute AR ) or Innerrhoden (Oberegg) depending on the denomination of their respective owners . This curious system has been gradually simplified. But it wasn't until the young Swiss federal state asked for clarification in 1870 that today's solution was implemented. Since then, the whole of Oberegg has belonged to Innerrhoden and forms an exclave in the Ausserrhoder region.

Reunion?

A later reunification was already mentioned in the land partition letter of 1597:
