The classic archival material kept in the State Archives, which currently comprises around 3500 running meters, is divided into twelve departments of different sizes. The departments Old Archive (A), Helvetic Archive (B) and New Archive (C) are historical. Based on the principle of provenance, the administrative archive (D) and court archive (E) departments were set up for the archive material taken over from 1986. The Photo and Image Archive (J) department essentially comprises photographers and image bequests. The microforming department (K) brings together all microfilms created in the course of seizure actions; the department (L) was created for the film and video archive. The Collection and Documentation Department (M) contains a wide range of materials without any clear reference to provenance. The official publications department (N) brings together series of publications produced by the federal government, canton and municipalities. The non-government archive holdings are assigned to the private archives (P) and deposits (Q) departments. The graphic opposite shows the proportions of the departments in the total inventory.

The common archive, which contains the documents of the Land of Appenzell that were created up to the division of the land in 1597, is located in the State Archives of Appenzell Innerrhoden.
