The Scottish Football League Second Division was played in 1986/87 for the twelfth time after the introduction of the Premier Division as the third highest Scottish league . In addition, it was the twelfth event as the third highest division of men's football in Scotland under the name Second Division . In the 1986/87 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 game days. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won Meadowbank Thistle , which at the same time secured participation in the First Division season 1987/88 . In addition to Thistle , the runner-up Raith Rovers also rose. Scorer with 26 goals was John Sludden of Ayr United .
