The Scottish Football League Second Division was played for the fifth time in 1979/80 . After the introduction of the Premier Division it was only the third highest Scottish league . In addition, it was the fifth event as the third highest division of men's football in Scotland under the name Second Division . In the 1979/80 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 game days. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .

The championship was won by FC Falkirk , which at the same time secured participation in the First Division season 1980/81 . In addition to Falkirk , the runner-up FC East Stirlingshire rose. The top scorer with 25 goals was Ian Campbell of Brechin City .
