The Scottish Football League Second Division was played for the first time in 1975/76 , after the Premier Division was introduced as the third highest Scottish league . It was also the first event as the third highest division of men's football in Scotland under the name Second Division . In the 1975/76 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 26 matchdays. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .

The championship was won by FC Clydebank , which also secured participation in the 1976/77 First Division season . In addition to Clydebank , the runner-up Raith Rovers also rose. Michael Lawson of Stirling Albion was top scorer with 18 goals .
