The Scottish Football League Second Division was played in 2000/01 for the 26th time after the introduction of the Premier League as the third highest Scottish league . In addition, it was the twenty-sixth event as the third highest division of men's football in Scotland under the name Second Division . In the 2000/01 season, 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 match days. Each team played four times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .

Partick Thistle won the championship , which at the same time secured participation in the 2001/02 First Division season . In addition to Thistle , the runner-up FC Arbroath also rose. FC Queen's Park and Stirling Albion had to relegate to the Third Division . The top scorer with 18 goals was Isaac English from FC Stenhousemuir .
