The Scottish Football League Second Division was played in 1985/86 for the eleventh time after the introduction of the Premier Division as the third highest Scottish league . In addition, it was the eleventh event as the third highest division of men's football in Scotland under the name Second Division . In the 1985/86 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 match days. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won Dunfermline Athletic , which at the same time secured participation in the First Division season 1986/87 . In addition to Athletic , the runner-up Queen of the South also rose. The top scorer with 21 goals were the two teammates Paul Smith and Keith Wright of the Raith Rovers .
