The Scottish Football League Second Division was held for the second time in 1976/77 . After the introduction of the Premier Division it was only the third highest Scottish league . In addition, it was the second event as the third highest football division for men in Scotland under the name Second Division . In the 1976/77 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 matchdays. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .

The championship won Stirling Albion , which at the same time secured participation in the First Division season 1977/78 . In addition to Stirling , the runner-up Alloa Athletic also rose. The top scorer with 24 goals was James Frye from FC Stranraer .
