The Scottish Football League Third Division was held under this name for the seventh time in 2000/01 . It was also the seventh edition of the Third Division as only fourth highest Scottish league . In the fourth-highest division of men's football in Scotland , 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 matchdays in the 2000/01 season. Each team played four times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .

The championship won Hamilton Academical , which at the same time together with the table runner-up FC Cowdenbeath , secured participation in the 2001/02 Second Division season . The top scorer with 24 goals was David McFarlane of Hamilton Academical.
