The Scottish Football League Third Division was held for the fourth time in 1997/98 under this name. It was also the fourth edition of the Third Division as only fourth highest Scottish league . In the fourth-highest division of men's football in Scotland , 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 matchdays in the 1997/98 season. Each team played four times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won Alloa Athletic , which together with the table runner-up FC Arbroath , secured participation in the Second Division season 1998/99 . The top scorer with 20 goals was Colin McGlashan of FC Montrose .
