Johann Ulrich Meyer

Johann Ulrich Meyer (born July 21, 1825 in Wald ; † February 4, 1868 in Vienna ; resident in Trogen ) was a Swiss doctor , cantonal councilor and national councilor from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Johann Ulrich Meyer was a son of Mattias Meyer, community clerk, and Anna Barbara Frischknecht. He was a nephew of Johannes Meyer . In 1852 he married Anna Barbara Tanner, daughter of Johannes Tanner, cutler . He attended the Trogen Cantonal School and had private lessons with Pastor Knaus in Speicher. From 1844 to 1846 he graduated from high school in Stuttgart . From 1846 to 1850 he studied medicine at the University of Heidelberg and obtained a doctorate in medicine. He practiced as a doctor in Trogen.

From 1850 to 1866 he was the cantonal interrogator. From 1864 to 1866 he was a member of the Ausserrhoder Grand Council . From 1866 to 1867 he was chief judge . From 1867 to 1868 he held the office of governor and from 1866 to 1868 he sat in the National Council as a representative of the liberal movement. From 1851 to 1865 he was a member of the cantonal medical commission. He presided over it from 1867 to 1868. From 1859 to 1867 and from 1864 to 1867 he was a member of the cantonal and state school commission. Meyer had a decisive influence on health policy in Ausserrhoden. The new sanitary regulations of 1867 were primarily his work. During a stay in Vienna, where he stayed for education and treatment of deafness, Meyer committed suicide in a by a meningitis caused mental confusion suicide .
