Ernst Leisi (historian)

Ernst Leisi (born September 7, 1878 in Kleindietwil , Oberaargau , Canton of Bern ; † April 5, 1970 in Frauenfeld , reformed , resident in Attiswil ) was a Swiss teacher and historian .

Life

Ernst Leisi was born as the son of the miller Urs Leisi and the teacher Maria, nee Ritter. After attending secondary school in Aarberg (1889-94), the teachers' college in Hofwil (1895/96) and high school in Zurich (1896/97), Leisi studied classical philology and history at the University of Zurich from 1897 . In 1906 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. with Hermann Hitzig with the dissertation “The witness in Attic law”.

Subsequently, from spring 1906 to autumn 1947 he worked as a history teacher at the canton school in Frauenfeld , from 1928 to 1932 as its vice-rector and from 1932 to 1944 as its rector . From the winter of 1939 until her departure in 1941, Leisi helped the German emigrant Käthe Vordtriede with formalities and accommodation. At that time she was referred to as “our family refugee” and only became known in post-war Germany. In addition, he chaired the Historical Association of the Canton of Thurgau from 1936 to 1960 and the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings from 1941 to 1952 and 1954 to 1955 , which made him an honorary member in 1952 and honorary president in 1959. In addition, Leisi was a member of the board of directors of the Thurgau and Swiss associations for homeland security .

Leisi, who edited the " Thurgauische Urkundenbuch " between 1925 and 1967 , made a name for himself as the author of numerous local historical writings.

In 1911 he married Maria, the daughter of the teacher Peter Schneller. He was the father of the Englishist Ernst Leisi .
