Bruno Meyer (historian)

Bruno Meyer (born February 20, 1911 in Zurich ; † May 9, 1991 in Frauenfeld , reformed , resident in Olten ) was a Swiss archivist and historian .

Life

Bruno Meyer was born as the son of the engineer Hans Meyer. After attending schools in Zurich and completing his Matura in 1929 , Meyer began studying history in Zurich between 1929 and 1935 , which he completed in 1935 with the academic degree of Dr. phil. completed. To this end, he completed courses at the Austrian Institute for Historical Research in Vienna between 1934 and 1935 and at the École nationale des chartes in Paris between 1936 and 1937 .

As a result, Meyer worked from 1937 to 1979 as the state archivist for the Canton of Thurgau . In addition, Meyer served as director of the Napoleon Museum Arenenberg from 1947 to 1988 and of the Historical Museum of the Canton of Thurgau and the Natural History Museum of the Canton of Thurgau from 1959 to 1977 .

He also presided over the Association of Swiss Archivists from 1953 to 1974 and the Historical Association of the Canton of Thurgau from 1960 to 1982. In 1959 Meyer succeeded the state archivist of Vorarlberg Meinrad Tiefenthaler as president of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings . During Meyer's term of office, the association overcame the stagnation of the war and post-war years: In 1965, on Meyer's initiative, a fundamentally revised statute was created that is still valid today; In 1968 the club celebrated a widely recognized centenary. Meyer's presidency ended in 1972 when he was appointed honorary president.

Bruno Meyer had been married to the historian Elisabeth Meyer-Marthaler since 1941 . He died on May 19, 1991 at the age of 80 in Frauenfeld.

His estate is kept in the Thurgau State Archives.

Act

In his extensive scientific work, Bruno Meyer mainly dealt with the formation of the Confederation from the 12th to the 14th century, the late medieval and early modern Thurgau history as well as archival issues.
