Meinrad Tiefenthaler

Meinrad Tiefenthaler (born March 21, 1902 in Frastanz ; † August 21, 1986 in Gurtis ) was an Austrian historian and archivist .

Life

Meinrad Tiefenthaler, son of the master carpenter Josef Tiefenthaler, high school graduate at the Bundesgymnasium Feldkirch , began studying history, German and folklore at the philosophical faculty of the University of Innsbruck before becoming a Dr. phil. received his doctorate . At the beginning of his professional career, Tiefenthaler held a scientific assistant position with Adolf Helbok at the Institute for Alpine Settlement and Local Studies in Innsbruck. He then completed an archive training with Otto Stolz at the regional government archive in Innsbruck.

On May 1, 1928 Meinrad Tiefenthaler joined the Vorarlberg State Archives , initially as a contract employee, from March 1, 1930 as Unterland archivist and from July 1, 1937 as State archivist. In May 1939, Tiefenthaler succeeded Viktor Kleiner as the head of the State Archives, which he held - interrupted from his military service in the years 1943 to 1945 - until he retired in 1963 due to illness. Meinrad Tiefenthaler also headed the Vorarlberg State Museum from 1946 to 1953 . He was succeeded by Elmar Vonbank after.

In addition, Meinrad Tiefenthaler, who was appointed regional archivist in 1948, worked as an editor of various magazines, such as "Alemannia" and " Heimatkundliche Mitteilungen ", whose first post-war issue he published in 1949. In 1946, Tiefenthaler founded the “Montfort” magazine, the “quarterly journal for the past and present of Vorarlberg”, which he also edited. In addition Meinrad worked Tiefenthaler in numerous regional studies associations, as in the " Bodensee-historical society ", he from 1955 to 1959 as President of the Management Board and appointed him an honorary member in 1968.

Meinrad Tiefenthaler - author of a total of 69 historical treatises, especially on the regional history of Vorarlberg - did a great job as archivist in the development of numerous important sources, saving the archives and libraries of abolished monasteries and modernizing the state archive.
