The Bundesgymnasium und Bundesrealgymnasium Feldkirch (short: BG and BRG Feldkirch ) is a general education higher school in Feldkirch , Vorarlberg . In the 2018/19 school year, 686 students were taught by 81 teachers .
history
The first mention of a Latin school in Feldkirch , which was located near the Bludenzer Tor, is documented around 1438. In 1648, at the urging of the Jesuits, the city council decided to build a grammar school . The construction took two years and the costs were borne by the city of Feldkirch. It was finally founded on April 7, 1649. The language of instruction at that time was Latin . There were 30 students and 2 teachers at the school. When the city fire in 1697, the grammar school was also among the houses affected and the students were moved to the former infirmary in Levis .
Under Maria Theresa , the Feldkirch grammar school was threatened with liquidation. There were entrance exams in the subjects: religion, reading, handwriting , Latin (declining, conjugating, comparing) and arithmetic. The student had to be at least ten years old and have a certificate from the German secondary school. From 1785 school fees were required. As a result, so many students left the high school that they had to forego this money again. In 1793 the rod test was reintroduced as a punishment.
Around 1780 there were three grammatical classes (subjects: religious studies, Latin, Greek, history, geography, arithmetic , algebra , geometry, natural history, physics, German, calligraphy and singing) and two humanity classes ( poetry , rhetoric ).
In 1809 the school was moved to the priory building that now houses the municipal utilities. In 1838 the first secular teacher taught at a grammar school. In 1849 there was the first director as head of the institution. On November 19, 1860, the new high school building at the Johanneskirche was inaugurated.
In the 1860s the Jesuits were urged by the Vorarlberg state parliament to give up leadership and teaching at the Feldkirch city high school. The Jesuits subsequently founded the “ Stella Matutina ” in Feldkirch.
In 1869 the school was run for the first time with a newly elected secular faculty. In 1910 the first student came to the grammar school. During the First World War , the school was used as a reserve hospital. In 1923 she received the title of “Federal High School”.
In 1970 , the new grammar school was built in Altenstadt , Rebberggasse, and started operating in the 1973/74 winter semester. An extension was completed in 2001.
