Werner Nagel (philologist)

Werner Nagel (born December 12, 1937 in Bregenz ) is an Austrian classical philologist who, as a teacher, non-fiction and textbook author, helped shape the teaching of Latin and Romance languages.

Life

After graduating from high school, Werner Nagel studied Latin , Greek and archeology as well as English and American studies in Innsbruck . In 1957 he joined the K.Ö.HV Leopoldina Innsbruck . He graduated in 1962 with a master's degree and doctorate in ancient languages. He passed teaching examinations in Latin and English and worked at the Stella Matutina Jesuit college in Feldkirch until it closed , and then at the Bundesgymnasium Feldkirch . Nagel translated the study travel guide R. and C. Cook, Southern Greece, into German, which was published by Hans E. Günther Verlag in Stuttgart. In the course of his career he held numerous offices. Nagel gave lectures at the Bildungswerk, at the Federal Pedagogical Institute, at regional and Austria-wide meetings of the Working Group on Classical Philologists and international congresses (Heidelberg, Lisbon, Ouro Preto / Brazil). Since his marriage to a Brazilian woman, he has been interested in the Portuguese language, and later also in Spanish and other Romance languages. He incorporated his experience with regard to their developments in Latin into Latin lessons, which earned him a teaching position at the University of Salzburg . He has written a number of academic articles to update Latin teaching and teacher training.
