Josef Wichner (around 1900)

Josef Wichner (born October 23, 1852 in Bludenz , † June 14, 1923 in Krems an der Donau ) was a storyteller, youth writer, teacher and folklorist. The folk writer, who was born in Bludenz, became known through numerous stories, books for young people and local novels.

Life

Josef Wichner was born the son of a master tailor. As a child he lived in Bludenz, where he also attended elementary school and then completed the kk Real and Obergymnasium in Feldkirch, today grammar school in Feldkirch , where he later also taught (from 1878 to 1880). Josef Wichner studied German language and literature (1875–1878) in the seminary in Brixen (1872–1875) and at the University of Innsbruck, and then passed the state examinations for teaching in Latin and Greek. He later wrote about his school and university days in his autobiographical novels "Im Schneckenhaus" , "Im Studierstädtlein" and "An der Hochschule" .

In 1880 Wichner tied the knot with Marie Mathiasch in Vienna. From 1880 to 1908 he worked as a professor at the grammar school in Krems an der Donau. From 1880 the Wichner family - they remained childless - lived in Krems an der Donau. The school council, known among others with Marie Eugenie Delle Grazie , Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn and Peter Rosegger , belonged to the conservative camp, belonged for many years to the committee of the Lower Austrian People's Education Association in Krems and published the "Volksbildungsblätter", the organ of the association. In addition, between 1889 and 1912, Wichner held several literary readings “from his own works” as well as slide shows at the Vienna People's Education Association and at the Vienna Urania.

Wichner died in 1923 at the age of 71 in Krems an der Donau. A street name there reminds of him today - Josef-Wichner-Straße.
