Anton Schmutzer

Anton Schmutzer (born July 3, 1864 in Feldkirch , Austria ; † May 27, 1936 there ) was an Austrian musician , composer and choir director .

Life

Anton Schmutzer was born as the son of Philipp M. Schmutzer the Elder . Ä. born and received his first training as a violinist through him. In his birthplace Feldkirch he attended a grammar school from 1875 to 1883. In 1883 he began to study law at the University of Innsbruck , while listening to music theory with Josef Pembaur the Elder. Ä. and perfected his violin playing with Johann Bohus. In a theater orchestra he stood out for his artistry and received the Jakob Stainer Prize in 1884 . In 1886 he continued his studies at the Universities of Graz and Prague , although in the end he gave up law.

Returned to Feldkirch, he became his father's deputy and successor as choir regent, at the same time music teacher at the Jesuit grammar school Stella Matutina (1892-1933) and from 1912 to 1926 also at the grammar school in Feldkirch . He composed mainly for choirs and church events. The musical life in Feldkirch owes a lot to his diverse activities.

In the "Ländle", as the Vorarlbergers affectionately call their homeland, Anton Schmutzer's song " 's Ländle " is well known, even if many do not know the full text. The song was declared the Vorarlberg national anthem in 1949 .
