Wilfried Berchtold

Wilfried Berchtold (born June 21, 1954 in Feldkirch ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ). From 1991 to 2019 he was mayor of the district capital Feldkirch in Vorarlberg .

Life

After graduating from the Bundesgymnasium Feldkirch , he studied at the University of World Trade in Vienna , graduating with a Masters degree in commercial science . He then attended a university course to train export merchants at the State Education Center Schloss Hofen in Lochau . From 1980 to 1986 he was state parliamentary club secretary and state party secretary of the ÖVP Vorarlberg. From 1986 to 1991 he worked as a consultant in the department for foreign trade and trade policy in the Vorarlberg Chamber of Commerce. In 1990 and 1991 he was a member of the ÖVP reform commission.

Political career as mayor of Feldkirch

Berchtold became mayor of Feldkirch on July 22, 1991, as the successor to the resigned mayor Heinz Bilz , who was made an honorary citizen of Feldkirch on the same day. In addition, Wilfried Berchtold was chairman of the Feldkirch community association for waste management and environmental protection from 1992 to 1995 and was president of the Vorarlberg community association from 1995 to 2011. In this function, he represented the Vorarlberg community association externally and carried out the resolutions of the association board and the Vorarlberg community day.

He was re-elected in the municipal council elections in April 1995. In 2000, the municipal council election in Feldkirch had to be repeated because not all voting booths were displayed, which did not affect the direct election of the mayor. In the direct election in 2005, too, Wilfried Berchtold prevailed with a turnout of 57.54 percent with 70.13 percent of the votes in the first round, as well as in the 2010 election with 76 percent. In the course of the municipal council and mayoral election in 2015 , Wilfried Berchtold was re-elected with 52.79% of the votes in the direct election.

On December 14, 2018, Wilfried Berchtold announced his retirement as Feldkirch's mayor after almost 28 years at the helm of city politics for the first quarter of 2019. In February 2019, he first handed over the chairmanship of the Feldkirch People's Party to his designated successor Wolfgang Matt . At a ceremony of the Feldkirch city council on March 12, 2019, Berchtold was finally adopted into retirement and his successor was elected as the new mayor.

Private life

Berchtold is the eldest son of the official director in the calm of the financial state directorate and former member and 1st vice-president of the Vorarlberg state parliament Andreas Berchtold . Wilfried Berchtold is a married father of three daughters and one son.

Berchtold hit the headlines across Austria on October 4, 2010 after his longtime lover reported him for rape. On March 4, 2011, in the main hearing at the Feldkirch Regional Court , he was acquitted of allegations of rape. Subsequently , the Supreme Court rejected the annulment complaints brought in by the public prosecutor's office and the representatives of the private parties in a judgment of September 21, 2011, whereby the acquittal became final.
