Infirmary Feldkirch

The former infirmary with outbuildings is the name given to two listed houses in Feldkirch , which are now a youth hostel .

place

The buildings are located in the Levis district of the Austrian municipality of Feldkirch on Reichsstraße. It belongs to the Altenstadt cadastral community . Next to the infirmary is the also listed Catholic Church of St. Magdalena .

history

The infirmary was first built in the 14th century as a leper house far outside of what was then the city of Feldkirch. The Magdalenenkirche next to the infirmary also dates from the same century. Since it is recorded that the Magdalenenkirche suffered severe damage in a fire in 1557, it is assumed that the infirmary was also damaged or destroyed and was rebuilt in the late 16th or early 17th century. The oldest parts of today's building are dated to this time. The building was probably extended in the 17th century by an extension to the east and an extension on the north side. After the high school building in Feldkirch burned down in a major fire on August 6, 1697, the infirmary was briefly used as emergency quarters for school lessons.

The infirmary originally included an infirmary made up of meadows and arable land near the house, which was bought in 1847 by the Feldkirch manufacturer Carl Ganahl .

In the 20th century, the infirmary served as accommodation for the impoverished Feldkirch families. A youth hostel has been located in the infirmary since April 13, 1985, and the annex building now houses a shelter for the bus stop in front of it and the entrance to an underpass on the other side of Reichsstraße.
